5 tips to finding student accommodation under R4 000 (Cape Town)

This must be one of the questions we are asked the most.

We have 5 tips to finding student accommodation under R4 000 per month, walking distance to UCT!

1. Find a Digsmate!

Our best tip to finding affordable student accommodation is to link up with other students looking for the same thing. Have a look (and keep looking) at the 'Find a Digsmate' page on www.digsconnect.com to find the perfect roommate! This way you could look at sharing an apartment close to UCT - and you have two people searching for the same thing (bettering your chances!).

Another option that some students explore is looking for 1 bedrooms apartments that could easily function with the lounge as one bedroom and the bedroom as the other. This is less than ideal, but gives students far more privacy than sharing a room.

2. Make a reminder to look every day

We are thrilled that on DigsConnect we get some pretty sweet deals listed. Sometimes (like at the moment) this is a double room in Upper Claremont for R3 500 per month. Unbelievable value.

The only way to get these deals though, is to keep on checking. They get taken in a matter of hours. Soon we will be adding an email alerts functions so that you will be notified whenever a property is listed in your price bracket.

3. Take a risk

This is not something that we suggest during peak season (September - February), but try messaging a landlord who has listed a property sightly over your budget and ask if they would consider a lower offer.

Sometimes during the quiet months (winter in South Africa) these landlords may be a little flexible with their rental prices.

4. Sign a lease in August!

I know this sounds totally bizarre, but properties seem to be far cheaper if you sign at unconventional times of the year. Prices are the highest in December and January.

5. Consider moving in with your partner

One of the easiest and best ways to save some money is to move in with your partner. Not only will they keep you warm in the winter months, but it will also cut the rent in half. Win win.
